1956 cruise ship disaster. In mid-February an engine room fire onboard the Carnival Cruises ship Triumph left more than 4000 passengers stranded in the Gulf of Mexico with no hot water and few working toilets. On 22 December 1963 a Dutch-built Greek-owned cruise ship called the TSMS Lakonia was sailing off Madeira. The ocean liner SS Andrea Doria was rammed by MS Stockholm now Astoria on July 25 1956.

At around 1100 pm on 22 December a fire broke out in the ships hairdressing saloon and quickly spread to other areas making it difficult to fight the blaze. The ship drifted to within 100 metres of running aground before they were able to restart one of the engines police. It had been touted as unsinkable and set sail amongst great fanfare.
On October 4 1980 the aurora borealis danced above the stricken cruise ship as the elderly passengers crawled out of bed and made their way to the upper deck after the captain announced that there was a fire in the engine room. As the trawler pulled away there was a deafening sound of metal scraping against metal. It was taken at 158 pm just 5 minutes after the first one.
On the night of April 14 the Titanic struck an iceberg that damaged the hull on the port side of the ship. SS Southern Cross was an ocean liner built in 1955 by Harland Wolff Belfast Northern Ireland for the United Kingdom-based Shaw Savill Albion Line for EuropeAustralia service. 128 people were killed in the disaster.
